K2 Think: UAE Unveils Open-Source AI Reasoning Model
The United Arab Emirates has introduced K2 Think, an open-source AI reasoning system developed by the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) and the G42 technology group. Despite its relatively compact size—32 billion parameters—K2 Think demonstrates performance that rivals or exceeds models many times larger, including excelling in math reasoning tasks.
Built on Qwen2.5-32B, the model incorporates six innovation pillars, such as chain-of-thought supervised fine-tuning, reinforcement learning with verifiable rewards, and a novel “agentic planning before reasoning” approach inspired by cognitive science. It also leverages advanced hardware, running on Cerebras’ Wafer-Scale Engine, one of the world’s most powerful AI chips.
K2 Think builds on the UAE’s previous open-source model, K2-65B, by offering full transparency into its reasoning process. Unlike many AI systems, it allows researchers to reproduce not just its outputs but also its learning pathway, addressing the “black box” challenge in AI.
This release highlights the UAE’s growing role in open-source AI development, alongside initiatives like Jais (Arabic), Nanda (Hindi), and Sherkala (Kazakh), positioning the country as a leader in AI innovation and global collaboration.
